A kitchen tool that is somewhat old fashioned, but no other device can do what it does, not even your food processor.
To make homemade applesauce, wash and cut apples into quarters leaving the seeds and stems on. Place in a pot, cover with water and cook until soft. Transfer apples to the food mill and begin processing. Add sugar, cinnamon, cardamon, mace, lemon juice to taste and...Voila! the best homemade applesauce.
A food mill removes undesirable fiber, stems, skins, and seeds from soups and sauces as it separates and purees. For instance, a potato soup put through the food mill with the finest of the three stainless steel discs comes out velvety smooth. Boiled potatoes using a coarser disc rices them beautifully into mashed potatoes. Use the fine disc to make homemade baby food, then graduate to junior food with the coarser discs.
This food mill is made of non-reactive 18/10 stainless and comes with three interchangeable stainless steel discs which remove easily for washing. The long comfortable wooden handle and substantial pot rests hold the mill steady when in use. Instructions are included. Handwashing in warm, soapy water is recommended.
