Call it what you like: hache-viande, mezzaluna, rocking mincer, crescent-shaped knife, half-moon knife. The mezzaluna is a form of knife that is used by exerting pressure on both ends of the blade. You may cut on a board using a rocking motion to mince or cut in a bowl that matches the curve of the blade. Generally, it is easier to learn to use than a chef's knife.
